They say all things must come to an end, and this trip is no exception. After a short but lovely visit to the Castles of Rome and two intense days in Rome, now it’s time to go Tivoli, famous for Villa d’Este and Hadrian’s Villa.
I am leaving for Turin in the afternoon and I don’t have time to visit the residences; on top of that the sky is grey and menacing rain. Still, I want to enjoy my holiday until the very last moment and just take a tour of the town.
I must confess that I was a bit disappointed. Maybe it was the depressing weather and a violent shower that suddenly burst and left me wet from head to toes, but I got a sense of a somewhat decaying place. Don’t get me wrong. It’s charming and beautiful, but it’s a bit disheartening to see historical houses and places ruined by time and lack of intervention. If on one side it adds up to their charm and fascination, on the other I can’t stop thinking what these places will look like in 30 or 50 years if nothing is done.
Criticisms apart, Tivoli is undoubtedly a beautiful town, full of history and lovey sights over the surroundings, being on top of a hill. It was a pity that the sudden storm and lack of time didn’t allow me to discover more, but then it just makes me want to come back as it really deserves a longer visit – hopefully on a sunny and pleasant weather!
